Rhode Island foreclosure attorney faces one year suspension

A foreclosure lawyer in Rhode Island has been suspended for one year by a U.S. District Court judge, an article from the Providence Journal reported on Monday, December 2.

U.S. District Court Judge John McConnell Jr. suspended attorney George Babcock from handling foreclosure cases in the court for one year. Though the basis of the suspension was not revealed, attorney Babcock was ordered to pay $10,000 in August due to falsely stating documents had been filed.

Babcock’s clients that are being tried in McConnell’s District Court were advised to either get a new lawyer or personally represent themselves in court if they do not wish for their claim to be dismissed.

Attorney Stuart Leeds’ suspension became effective immediately after a judge revoked his license from a six-month probation. The initial probation came when Leeds was found to have made false claims to the court about what he had filed for his client facing felony charges in a 2011 trial.

Leeds now has to file an affidavit by June 14 proving that he notified all his clients and opposing counsel of his suspension and has given all clients their money and property back in accordance with the order.
